Ike Hay

Egyptian Gate, Front Street, Harrisburg PA. September 3, 1986

I am pleased that a Committee for the Restoration of the Egyptian Gate is working in 2022 to restore this sculpture, my favorite of Ike’s site-specific pieces. Stay tuned.

SHOGUN 12’, Centre Park Place, Reading PA, 1986

Image of Ike with the maquette for the sculpture, SHOGUN. It was commissioned by the Reading Redevelopment Authority in 1986. The concept emulates the pagoda influence of this building, refurbished into apartments. This building was possibly influenced by the landmark pagoda in the town.

HOT SPILL 11’ Foundry Plaza, York, PA, 1984

HOT SPILL Painted Steel Plate, Cast Bronze and Aluminum, July 1984.

The original location when the piece was erected in 1984, was at the west side of the park. Sometime in the 2010 range we realized that the piece had been moved to overlook the open air seating area. These images were taken in 2013 so that I could show Ike how York city had maintained it and moved the location to meet the changing needs of the area. That was gratifying to know. This piece was Ike’s favorite of his site specific sculptures.

METAL KNOT STUDIES , Ganser Library Gallery — 1978

A recent addition to the Art Department at Millersville State College, later to become Millersville University, in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, Ike was an prolific sculptor with a minimalist aesthetic. Keltic knots were a source of inspiration for this one-person show on campus. Many of the pieces were modular for easy storage and assembly, as in the Mansfield University piece in the next image below.

UNITY, Mansfield University, Mansfield, Pennsylvania — 1978

UNITY, Mansfield University — 1978

The Macquette, left was the original proposed and winning 12’ sculpture for the competition on the campus of Mansfields University. After the piece had been fabricated, the Pennsylvania Board of State Architectural Governors deemed that they had been left out of the oversight of the national competition and they decided that they did not approve of the winning sculpture, and that it would have to be replaced with one of their choosing. Oh, the egos of the group of men who felt slighted. The university had to cover the costs of fabrication of the design that had to be scrapped and replaced with another work from the artist. They liked the METAL KNOT series and selected one.
