Pink Freedom II
2018 Pink Freedom II, needle- and wet- felted sculpture, is two-sided and includes threads, beads, and gold leafed eggshells. Each mini enclosed cup component is fully needle felted, hollow, and incorporated onto the wet felted square component to become one multidimensional sculpture. Plexi “cake” display 11½” square on 12” square pink base; felt sculpture 8” square x 2½” D.
The felted wool sculpture is two-sided with threads, beads, and gold leafed eggshells. Hollow cups and flipside solid cake elements are felted into one piece, self-contained within a cake-like mirror display. Color refractions from the wooden base to the edges of the Plexiglass convey the concept that no matter the volume, we all have a voice, varied and similar freedoms in speech and expression.
The mini cake components are solid needle felting and likewise, are felted onto the square wet felted element to become one piece. The piece is self-contained within a cake-like Plexiglass display base with mirror to showcase the art, which can be flipped to preferred side. The case becomes part of the sculpture in subtle color refractions from the petal pink wooden base to the edges of the Plexiglass.
The color refraction of the elements conveys the concept that no matter the volume, we all have a voice. Within that, each component represents our varied and similar voices in expression of our freedom to speak, which is a theme that I’ve been working with for a while. From humble eggshell to the glint of gold, we all have our voices. How to voice that into a display that hints of all sides of speaking our truths? But what about the lies that have taken root in our country? Propaganda lies.
